Science

Intent: At William Levick, we are committed to fostering a deep sense of curiosity and wonder in our young learners about the world around them. Our science curriculum aims to cultivate scientific literacy, critical thinking, and a lifelong passion for discovery. Through engaging hands-on activities and enquiry-based learning, we strive to empower our students to become active participants in the scientific process.

Impact: By engaging with science at an early age, children develop a solid foundation in scientific concepts and methods, helping them build important skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Implementation: We have designed an engaging and comprehensive science curriculum that aligns with the National Curriculum and encourages active student participation. This includes:

Development of Scientific Enquiry: Through exploring the scientific method, children learn to ask questions, make observations, record findings and draw conclusions. This fosters their ability to think critically, solve problems, and apply logical reasoning in various aspects of their lives.

Nurturing Curiosity and Creativity: Science sparks curiosity and encourages children to ask "why" and "how." By engaging in hands-on experiments and interactive activities, children learn to think creatively, develop their own hypotheses and explore the natural world with a sense of wonder and awe.

Scientific Knowledge: Our science curriculum is based on scientific knowledge, where children will learn key concepts in each science unit and then revisit these in future lessons. This allows the children to know more and remember more, building on knowledge year after year. Children record key facts through a variety of ways, for example using a concept map to assess knowledge known at the start and end of science units.

Making links to science careers: Throughout school we make links to science careers, to ensure children know the real purpose of what they are learning and help instill a love for science in our pupils, fostering their curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. We believe that a strong foundation in science prepares our young learners to become active contributors to a rapidly evolving world.
