Music

Intent: At William Levick Primary School, we aim to provide a well-rounded musical education that enables children to develop a lifelong appreciation for music. We use the Sparkyard Music Curriculum to deliver our music lessons to nurture children’s creativity, enhance their musical skills and broaden their understanding of music across various historical periods, genres, styles, and traditions. We strive to foster a love for singing, opportunities for playing musical instruments, composing, and utilising technology to create and appreciate music. We aim to deepen their understanding of how music is created, produced and communicated through the exploration of essential musical elements and notations.

Impact: By immersing our children in a comprehensive music program, we aim to have a positive impact on their overall development. Engaging with music will allow children to express themselves creatively, develop self-confidence, and promote emotional well-being.

Implementation: We have designed an engaging and comprehensive music curriculum that aligns with the National Curriculum and encourages active student participation. It is implemented through the following strands:

Perform, listen to, review, and evaluate music: Children will be provided with opportunities to listen to a wide range of music, including works by great composers and musicians from different historical periods, genres, styles, and traditions. Regular singing activities will be incorporated into lessons, allowing children to develop their vocal skills and sense of pitch. Children will be encouraged to critically evaluate and review musical performances and compositions, developing their ability to analyse and articulate their opinions.

Create and compose music: Children will have the opportunity to explore their creativity by composing their own music individually and in collaboration with others. Children will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument of their choice and specialist instrumental teachers are available to provide individual or group lessons.

Understanding Musical Elements and Notations: Children will explore the dimensions of music, including pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, and structure. They will learn to read and interpret both graphic and formal musical notations, enabling them to understand how music is written and communicated. Practical activities, such as rhythmic exercises, will strengthen their understanding of musical elements.

Through the implementation of our music curriculum, we aim to provide our children with a well-rounded musical education that fosters their creativity, enhances their musical skills, and cultivates a love of music. Our curriculum map for music can be found here and further details about music in our Foundation Stage can be found here.
